Saturday Basketball: J.O. Johnson’s John Petty beats Gadsden City with buzzer-beater

John Petty started 2016 in style.

Petty – one of the nation’s top prospects for the Class of 2017 – hit a 3-pointer with five seconds remaining to lift the Jaguars to a 59-58 victory over Gadsden City in the Comfort Suites/Holiday Inn Express New Year's Classic at Wallace State Community College in Hanceville. Petty finished with 20 points, seven rebounds and five blocked shots.

Samford signee J.O. Johnson, which also won The Huntsville Times Classic last week.

For Gadsden City (15-4), Shond Kidd-McKinney added 13 points.

1) Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa wins tourney title

Huffman nearly erased a 20-point halftime deficit, but Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa held on for a 59-53 victory to win the Metro Tournament hosted by Homewood.

Donovan Dooley led the Patriots in with 14 points, and teammate Breylin Jimerson was named tournament MVP.

2) Milestone surpassed

Ryan Hufford surpassed the 1,000-point mark during last week’s Gulf Coast Classic in Mobile. He is averaging 18 points per game this season.

Boys, Peyton Brown had 12 points, all on 3-pointers.

Boys, Kameron Woods added 11 points, including three 3-pointers, four assists and three steals.

Midfield’s Thomas Sims added 10 points. Pate Oakley led Bibb County with 19 points, with 15 on five 3-pointers.

Boys, Mitchell Langley added  four 3-pointers for 12 points.

Boys, Kevon Summerhill had 11 points and 12 rebounds. Central’s Ralph Barnett scored 13 points and Jeremy Bevis added 10.

Boys, Horn Lake (Miss.) 68, Jayce Willingham added 17 points. Cordova plays host to Muscle Shoals on Monday.

Girls, Taylor Aikerson had 19. 

Girls, Tabitha Robinson had 15. Moss Point’s Celia Rodgers scored 18 points.
