Bill Self fields questions at Big 12 Media Day

Kansas University men's basketball coach Bill Self discusses the style he expects his team to play this season and addresses broader issues in college athletics, such as autograph signing, Wednesday morning at Sprint Center, in Kansas City, Missouri.

— Kansas University’s basketball players have shown an ability to knock down the three during practices this preseason.

“The three best shooters on our team without question are (Conner) Frankamp, (Brannen) Greene and Svi (Mykhailiuk). They are all fighting for minutes,” KU coach Bill Self said at Wednesday’s Big 12 Media Day in Sprint Center.

“Brannen has shot the ball unbelievable. He’s shot it better than anybody. Svi when he gets on a roll is as good as anybody we’ve had (at KU). Conner is the same way. I want them to be shooters but complete players, too. Conner has worked hard at that. He’s become pretty good defensively.”

Hands wide: Self said he made a mistake last season in telling his players not to foul because of the new hand-check rule.

“I think we took away a lot of the aggressiveness by always saying, ‘Get your hands off. Don’t foul.’

‘Don’t foul’ is not going to be anything that comes out of my vocabulary again. I think we need to say, ‘Hands wide,’ because when you plant that seed, ‘Don’t foul’ automatically you’ve told your team to back off. I don’t think I did a good job of that last year,” Self stated.

Ellis confident: Self said junior Perry Ellis has “been our best player from an overall standpoint so far.”

“I think his mind-set is more aggressive. He knows he’s a good player. He’s always probably thought he was. Now he knows he is,” Self said. “He knows he should be our leading scorer.

“I think he’s ready to have a big year,” added Self, who told Ellis to watch film of former KU forward Marcus Morris of the Phoenix Suns.

“We’ll try to move him around where he’s not playing inside all the time,” Self added, estimating Ellis would play inside 30 percent of the time.

Point guard position: The point guard battle is likely between Frank Mason and Devonté Graham.

“Devonté is 'comfort' away from being lead guard on this team. I’m not saying he’s going to start. He could be our starter by midseason or before. He reminds me so much of Aaron Miles,” Self said.

This, that: Self said he voted Texas No. 1 in the preseason coaches’ poll. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams. ... KU junior Jamari Traylor was the only Jayhawk of the three at Media Day (Ellis, Selden) to wear his Big 12 ring. “It’s kind of a tradition somebody wears it, so I brought it,” Traylor said with a smile. Indeed, most years the Jayhawks bring their rings to Media Day and show them to curious players from other teams. ... Sophomore forward Landen Lucas, who is out because of a stress fracture in his lower leg, figures to miss at least another week of practice, Self said. ... Self attended the Royals’ ALCS-clinching victory over Baltimore on Wednesday afternoon after also attending KC’s win on Tuesday night. ... Self reiterated he wouldn’t be able to play all seven perimeter players this season, meaning two players ultimately might be playing fewer minutes than they like. Thus practices have been extremely competitive. ... Self was seated at a table in the main press area next to West Virginia’s Bob Huggins and Oklahoma’s Lon Kruger. “That’s a lot of victories right there,” a media member said. ... About 4,500 tickets plus more than 50 tables have been sold for the Oct. 27 “Celebrating 60 years” event featuring Self, Larry Brown, Roy Williams and Ted Owens in Allen Fieldhouse. There is not a World Series game scheduled that evening. Tickets are available at KUAthletics.com or by calling 800-34-HAWKS. “It’s just going to be great,” Self said. ... Kruger at the podium opened by saying, “First of all, go Royals. Is that appropriate?” He added, “What a great story. Fun to watch, having grown up in the area for sure.” .. Huggins wore a bow tie. “I’d kind of like to keep you guessing. I mean I don’t want people to think they’ve figured me out yet,” he said. … Self joked with Iowa State forward Georges Niang and LeBryant Nash of Oklahoma State in a Sprint Center hallway.

Ahh the preseason that time of year when anything is possible... except Conner starting at PG. Selden seems to be moving away from the PG spot too, PF though, I did not see that one coming.

Last year I watched Conner drain 3's in New Orleans for a 3 point contest, he could not miss, just crushed everyone. Greene looked pretty good too. Then a few months later in game situations those guys missed open shots over and over and over. So I am going to wait till I see them do it in some games before I take a bite of that apple again.

Should be an interesting year.

Suzi Marshall 5 years, 4 months ago

Recall how last year, at this time, we were all saying how the Hawks would dominate on offense with inside and outside play. "Because no team will be able to collapse in the interior, passing and driving lanes will be open to the rim. Wiggins and Selden will dominate driving for dunks. Embiid will be there for bail out passes leading to dunks. If teams do collapse, Frankamp, White and Greene will shoot them down." That's a quote of the general line that went around. What happened....Frankamp, Greene and White never saw much PT. When they played, they missed open shots. Teams collapsed into the lane. Stanford was the concluding example.

Mykailiuk has not shown the ability to hit game 3s. Every shooting stat I've seen on him, regardless of the team, has been horrible.

So I am also going to wait till I see them do it in some games before taking a bite of that apple again.

Svi hit 1 of 2 three pointers against USA Basketball just over a month ago. Hard to find higher pressure and better competition than that. But I think it's wait and see for every 3 point shooter this year. I expect Selden to be improved as well.

Rodney Crain 5 years, 4 months ago

Sorry Mike that is a vanilla excuse. Other freshman that we have had, and on other teams seem to play pretty well as freshman ranked as high or lower than ours. To whitewash it by using that as an excuse just does not cut it. Its ok Mike to say they just did not play very well. Like we would say about Tharpe a Junior last year.

Gary I know its late but this sentence does not make sense to me - - “Devonté is comfort away from being lead guard on this team.

Luca Rossi 5 years, 4 months ago

Yeah, thats an awkward sentence but can't really fault Gary for it since its a quote. However, we can question if he was falling asleep as he wrote the "This, that" paragraph. The mention about Self voting for Texas #1 is in there twice and I'm curious to know who "LeBryant Nash" is. Anyone know?

Rodney Crain 5 years, 4 months ago

Wow Gary's clear, benign, positive comment was removed, never seen that happen before either.

Ok if you say so I guess... Now my Freshman English teacher would say that is like trying to complicate a glass of water. Sure you can say it that way, but why would you want to?

Devonte will be our lead guard when is totally comfortable there. That is great to hear I had high hopes for him.

Ashwin Rao 5 years, 4 months ago

I wonder what that makes Frank feel... that he is a caretaker PG until Devonté is ready?

Dirk Medema 5 years, 4 months ago

Every recruit should make a returning player feel competition. Frank was losing the PG spot to the non-PG at the end of last year so he's gotta know that he needs to improve a lot for the team to be in the place they all want to be.

It also wouldn't be the first time that the incumbent started for the non-con, and the newbie moved from back-up to starter by conf season.

Mick Allen 5 years, 4 months ago

Frank was losing the point guard spot to a non point guard[Conner I assume is the reference] because Conner hit 3 3s against Stanford? That's quite a reach Dirk.

Glen Miller 5 years, 4 months ago

Really? Are we in English class? I'm so sorry that you are offended..... Ya'll need to lighten up a bit. If some of you didn't have something to bitch about, I guess the boards would be a boring place.

Rodney Crain 5 years, 4 months ago

Well, I asked a simple clarifying question since I have never seen "comfort away" used like that. Comfort away from home I get, comfort away from being I have never heard before. I was not offended.

Mike Adams 5 years, 4 months ago

Agree Glen ... I think many of the people on this board need to take a couple weeks off and get some perspective. There are usually 3-4 jabs on Perry's defensive abilities no matter what the article is about...good grief. They think they are being honest so that makes it a productive fan board - good grief.

Rodney Crain 5 years, 4 months ago

So unless we all play nice and never say anything negative about the article, the team nor the players, then and only then Mike we are welcome to post here? You get an opinion just like everyone else. Good grief Mike.

Can I say the word ass on here? I guess we'll find out

Brianna Zaleski 5 years, 4 months ago

Rodney, we all know that your "English teacher" was really your mother. Because with your people skills, the only logical explanation us that you were homeschooled. Zing!

Rodney Crain 5 years, 4 months ago

I think you meant "is" instead of "us" in your sentence, but I would have to defer to my English teachers on that.

My mother passed away when I was young, her birthday is coming up. My step mother worked during the week but she made me feel like I was her son every day. She did not have time for home schooling.

If Intelligent Design was the history being taught I would have preferred home schooling actually.

Lance Cheney 5 years, 4 months ago

I love when people try to make jokes or insults, sometimes even about other people's grammar, and they butcher it by using the wrong word or misspell a word, much like Brianna did.

Mike Adams 5 years, 4 months ago

You got her good Lance - good job stud.

Joseph Bullock 5 years, 4 months ago

Gary is correct in saying that what Self meant about DG is he will be the PG when he gets comfortable with the system. That is how I view what he said. Also, Rodney & Suzi, you are both correct about our shooting woes, last year. I also had very high hopes for that aspect of our team. But my best guess on our problems there, is that both CF & BG had trouble adjusting to big time college basketball, for several reasons. Learning a very difficult system, not being 'The Guy', and also, having to play serious defense (which was not at the top of the list, in high school. Also, not playing 'major minutes' probably affected their consistency, as it is very hard to get your rhythm, if you are not playing a lot.

Joseph Bullock 5 years, 4 months ago

OK Rodney & Suzi, I want your opinions on this, because I think you guys are extremely knowledgeable. Selden at Power Forward! To be honest, I didn't think he would be the PG (except in certain situations), once we got DG, and he still may play it, from time, to time, especially when we play a team with big guards, like Kentucky, and especially when the games matter the most. I think Selden may play PF when we are playing 'small ball'. He is certainly strong enough, and athletic enough. Also, if we are pressing, I think he could be the PF. It also might be an option, late in games, when our depth has worn other teams, bigs, down. What do you guys think? Or anyone else, please feel free to comment. I just think we have so manu options.

Shane Johnston 5 years, 4 months ago

The talk about moving Selden around so much is exhausting. Let's just put Selden where he has the best chance to be successful and leave it at that. Selden should play on the wing and, in my opinion, stay there. He is a 2 or 3. Maybe on other teams there are times when he would be the best point guard or best power forward on the roster. But I don't ever see that being the case at Kansas this year.

Mike Adams 5 years, 4 months ago

Right on - Wayne will never be a PG at Kansas. I have no idea why people would ever post this if they have watched him try and play point. He is an incredible 2 or 3 and that's it. There are 3 other players on the team that are far and away better at handling the ball no reason to keep bringing that

Mike Adams 5 years, 4 months ago

He won't play PF either. This is the usual talk that floats around. He will play the 3 most of the time and 2 others.

Rodney Crain 5 years, 4 months ago

I think Selden can play PF in certain situations. We do have a lot of options, at least on paper I agree. This should be a very interesting season. I cannot wait for it to begin. This is the worst part of the off season the last few weeks before it starts.

Shane Johnston 5 years, 4 months ago

Shooters also have to find other ways to justify their floor time. Our "shooters" are not our best athletes or all around players. Right now, none of those shooters are the best player on the team at any position.

Brianna Zaleski 5 years, 4 months ago

Hey LANCE, I wasn't making a joke about Rod's grammar (a simple glance at my comment would have proven that) but rather his overall personality on this site. He's generally an abrasive poster who likes to rile other posters up w his takes that make no sense, but are usually the opposite of what most of us think. As far as the use of "us" instead of "is", it's called autocorrect on the iPhone. Common problem for those who post from phones.

Rodney, my condolences on your mothers passing. I certainly wasn't taking a swipe at her, but at you instead.

Rodney Crain 5 years, 4 months ago

Brianna, I thought I am being realistic on here. The main reason I tend to get defensive after I am attacked is the "Homer" mentality (what most of you think?) that no one should ever criticize our coach or players on here. No matter that it actually turns out to be true (that make no sense?). There are others on here that agree with me btw, even on this thread (opposite on what we all agree with?). You alluded to my personality being the fault of my mother, who was my teacher(?). To make sure I took it right you ended it with Zing (a Scoopy Do exclamation!). Being home schooled is not a slam btw.

Since you want to comment on me instead of my point on our basketball program I felt compelled to reply. Is this where I put the Zonk or the Oh Snap? Appologies but I am unsure how to end a post with a Scooby Do exclamtion. We did not cover that in English class or in my upbringing.

fake Gary Bedore. The real Gary Bedore would never say "u" instead of "you".

I don't like the pic of Bill. He's too happy. I wanna see desperate Bill. That got us a title.

Really surprised only 4,500 tickets have been sold for the AFH 60th anniversary event. Personally, I think it'll be a far more entertaining event than Late Night, though I get that Late Night is free.

Joseph Bullock 5 years, 4 months ago

hey folks, we all have our opinions, and that is exactly what they are. Some people here think only their opinions are accurate, and that could not be more inaccurate! As far as who will play where, that is up to the coaching staff, but if you don't think Selden could, on occasion, play PF or PG, you have probably never played basketball. He does not have to be the best, or even the 2nd best, at those positions, if playing those positions, is situational. Have a nice day. Also, what is funny here (being sarcastic, of course), is how angry some of you get, when people disagree with you. That is real mature, isn't it! Not!
