JALEK FELTON

Mullins' Jalek Felton is the preseason Pee Dee Boys Basketball Player of the Year.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — After Franklin (Ohio) senior Luke Kennard went off for a Beach Ball Classic single game-record 52 points in a win over Mullins on Friday, the Auctioneers’ Jalek Felton wanted to top the performance a day later.

The sophomore came close but was unable to pass Kennard on the list as he put up a career-high 51 points in Mullins’ 83-74 win over Myrtle Beach in a consolation game of the Beach Ball Classic. Felton’s previous career-high was 48 set earlier this year against Marlboro County.

Felton is now second on the Beach Ball Classic single-game scoring list as he passed former NBA player Mike Bibby, who scored 48 in a game during the 1995 tournament while playing for Shadow Mountain (Ariz.).

“ I had no clue at first but my parents and the crowd were yelling and I heard them say I had (45 points),” Felton said. “There were a few minutes left and I tried to chase it.”

Felton had only 12 points in the first half as Mullins (5-6) and the Seahawks were tied at halftime. Felton then scored 25 points in under four minutes during the second half, and finished with 39 points in the frame as the Auctioneers came away with the victory.

Felton was 15-of-27 from the field, including 7-of-16 on 3-pointers. He also was 14-of-14 from the free-throw line,

“ We were tied up and I just thought if the ball isn’t in my hands it’s hard for my team to get going,” Felton said. “I tried to keep my team going and they got the ball to me and had faith and kept it going.”

Mullins led by as much as 19 in the second half, but the Seahawks cut their deficit to seven with a little over a minute left in the game.
