Miami native Huell impresses in final UAA game in Louisville

Class of 2016 power forward Dewan Huell narrowed his list of potential college destinations to 10 a few days ago, and the options reflect how talented the 6-foot-9 Miami native is.

Florida, Florida State, Louisville, LSU, Maryland, Miami, North Carolina, Notre Dame, South Carolina and South Florida are all in the top 10 for Huell’s services, and assistants from most of those schools saw him put up 25 points and 12 rebounds in a seven-point victory on Sunday in Team Breakdown’s fourth and final game at the Under Armour Association event in Louisville.

Huell scored in a variety of ways, splashing two mid-range jump shots and thundering in a pair of dunks, too. He was 11 of 18 from the field, and he was credited with two blocks, though it felt like he was more involved than that.

“Since my first game, I’ve played better and better,” Huell said. “This was probably my best game right here.”

The 6-9, 200-pounder made 33 of his 59 shots in four games this weekend and averaged 9.5 rebounds and one block a game. But Huell waved off any suggestion that he is a finished product.

“I think I can be better,” Huell said. “I’m not pleased yet.”

Huell, rated the 17th-best prospect in the Class of 2016 by ESPN and 22nd by Scout, said he’d like to improve the skill areas of his game, particularly his dribbling and jump shot. His footwork and strength also need work, he said.

As for recruiting, Huell didn’t delve into too much detail. Specifically asked about U of L, Huell said the Cardinals have “a great program” and that he is blessed to have a scholarship on the table. Assistant coach Mike Balado has attended several of Huell’s high school games in Miami, and head coach Rick Pitino caught a game in January of 2014.

Beyond that, Huell isn’t sure about his visit schedule yet, or if he’ll even take any. But he would strongly consider U of L for one of those five official visits.
