Freshman center Fab Melo said Wednesday that the injury to his lower leg is not an Achilles problem after all. He has a tear, he said, in the calf muscle of his right leg.
"It's been there for like two weeks," he said. "I thought it was my Achilles, but it hurts (in) the whole area."
Melo wore shower shoes and shorts at the Melo Center on Wednesday, en route to a treatment procedure with SU athletic trainer Brad Pike. He said he had an injection into his lower leg two days ago and spent the past three days wearing a protective boot to insulate the injury.
Melo has not practiced with his teammates. The Orange worked out on Sunday and Monday, but had Tuesday off before returning to the Melo Center on Wednesday. This is exam week for SU players.
The pain, Melo said, "is not too bad. But when I try to do exercise, it hurts really bad."
"We're going to try to rest him," SU coach Jim Boeheim said. "He's going to shoot around tomorrow and practice Friday. And if he feels good, he'll play Saturday. If he doesn't, he won't."
SU plays Iona at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Carrier Dome.
Melo, a native of Brazil, has been managing the snow in Syracuse, which has been pummeled by snow showers these past few days. He said he's actually enjoying the weather.
"The snow is pretty fun," he said. "Everybody was saying it was going to be bad and cold. It is cold, but it's still fun."
