Holiday Invitational

Kinston battles past Broughton in overtime, 49-46

Posted December 26, 2013

The Kinston Vikings weren’t happy with the way they performed in last year’s Holiday Invitational, getting knocked out after two losses.

In Thursday’s 49-46 win against host Raleigh Broughton, they felt they redeemed themselves a bit.

ESPN 5-star junior guard Brandon Ingram scored a team-high 15 points – including all three of his team’s points in the overtime – to lead the Vikings to their sixth win of the season.

“We came into today’s game coming off two losses in a row,” Kinston coach Perry Tyndall said. “We needed to show a sense of urgency. We’re fortunate to come away with the win.”

Broughton led 46-45 with less than 10 seconds remaining in regulation before Ingram sent the game to an extra frame with a free throw. In overtime, the 6-foot, 8-inch shooting guard had two blocks and two big rebounds to assure Kinston of a semifinal appearance in the Shavlik Randolph Foundation bracket of the HSOT. The Vikings will face the winner of Garner or Wheeler, Ga., at 4 p.m. on Friday at Broughton’s Holliday Gymnasium.

Ingram finished with 15 points; senior guard Andrew Lopez had 14 points and five assists while junior forward Darnell Dunn finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.

Broughton fell to 7-2 with the loss and was led by Cameron Gottfried’s 19 points on 8-of-15 shooting, 3-of-5 from 3-point range.

“Congratulations to Kinston; they were every bit as good as they were billed to be,” Broughton coach Jeff Ferrell said. “Brandon Ingram is a great player and has a bright future in front of him.”
