No. 1 Jefferson 111, Franklin 40: It was the Silas Melson show Friday night, as the Gonzaga-bound guard netted 52 points for Jefferson of North Portland in a 111-40 thrashing of host Franklin of Southeast Portland.

Melson, a 6-3 senior, nearly outscored Franklin's final game total in the first quarter when he connected on four 3-pointers and scored 28 points to give No. 1 Jefferson (11-1, 3-0 PIL) a 36-4 lead. The Democrats led Franklin (6-8, 0-3) 61-12 at halftime. Melson finished the game with five 3-pointers.

Junior point guard Kadeem Strickland finished a distant second for Jefferson with 24 points. Franklin freshman Nathan Fields led the Quakers with 17 points.

The Democrats will play in Seattle on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, before returning home to host Madison of Northeast Portland at 7:30 p.m. next Friday. Franklin will host Wilson of Southwest Portland at 7:30 p.m. next Friday.
